Socio Economic Thoughts of Al Ghazali

Introduction Al-Ghazālī (1058-1111 C.E.), a great theologian, philosopher and Sufi (Islamic mystic), was man of erudite and a prolific Islamic scholar of philosophy and ethical values, whose writings encompass all dimensions of life with special focus on socio-economic thought. As such his discussion of economic issues emerge in the ethical perspective of human life as a whole, rather than a segregated value-neutral discipline as it appears in the contemporary economic analyses and systems. Hence his analysis is generally normative rather than positive in nature. He was one of those eminent scholars of Iran who has left indelible impact on the Muslim world through his very significant contribution to different branches of Islamic learning: Islamic jurisprudence, theology, philosophy and mysticism. Being a Sunni Scholar, he belonged to the Shāfi'ī School of Islamic jurisprudence and at the same time followed Ash'arite School of theology. While debated on Ghazali's life and contribution, the scholars were and are extensively involved in studying and examining the range of texts he had written in order to get a better picture of the man. For some people Ghazali is the great "Defender of Islam" (Ḥujjat al-Islam, ); Ḥujjat literally meaning "proof". Others blame him for damaging the rational edifice of Islamic thought in his sharp critique of Muslim philosophers such as Ibn Sina and Al-Fārābi. Al-Ghazālī was writing in the second half of the 11th and early 12th centuries which were roughly six centuries before the emergence of Mercantilism and seven centuries before Adam Smith (1723-1790 C.E), that is, roughly six to seven centuries before the beginning of economics as a separate discipline. Even then, it is interesting to note that Al-Ghazālī writings contain a good number of economic ideas, although discussed in the ethical normative perspective. This aspect of Imam Ghazālī has not been taken up in detail by any of the contemporary scholarship. The socio-economic aspects of Ghazālī's thinking can only present a bare outline, but from this we can grasp what might be called his "Islamic social welfare function" as well as his views on the role of economic activities generally. An overriding aspect throughout his works is the concept of Maṣliḥa, or social welfare or utility ("common good"), a concept which encompasses all human affairs, economic and others, and which,

Islamic Capital Markets

Products and Strategies

Islamic Finance has experienced rapid growth in recent years, showing significant innovation and sophistication, and producing a broad range of investment products which are not limited to the complete replication of conventional fixed-income instruments, derivatives and fund structures. Islamic Finance represents an elemental departure from traditional interest-based and speculative practices, relying instead on real economic transactions, such as trade, investment based on profit sharing, and other solidary ways of doing business, and aims to incorporate Islamic principles, such as social justice, ecology and kindness, to create investment products and financial markets which are both ethical and sustainable. Products created according to Islamic principles have shown a low correlation to other market segments and are relatively independent even from market turbulences like the subprime crisis. Therefore, they have become increasingly popular with secular Muslims and non-Muslim investors, as highly useful alternative investments for the diversification of portfolios. In Islamic Capital Markets: Products and Strategies, international experts on Islamic Finance and Sharia'a Law focus on the most imminent issues surrounding the evolution of Islamic capital markets and the development of Sharia'a-compliant products. The book is separated into four parts, covering: General concepts and legal issues, including Rahn concepts in Saudi Arabia, the Sharia'a process in product development and the integration of social responsibility in financial communities; Global Islamic capital market trends, such as the evolution of Takaful products and the past, present and future of Islamic derivatives; National and regional experiences, from the world's largest Islamic financial market, Malaysia, to Islamic finance in other countries, including Germany, France and the US; Learning from Islamic finance after the global financial crisis; analysis of the risks and strengths of Islamic capital markets compared to the conventional system, financial engineering from an Islamic perspective, Sharia'a-compliant equity investments and Islamic microfinance. Islamic Capital Markets: Products and Strategies is the complete investors' guide to Islamic finance.

Iran and the Global Economy

Petro Populism, Islam and Economic Sanctions

The relationship between religion and the state has entered a new phase ever since the Iranian Revolution more than three decades ago. The recent mass uprisings against autocratic rulers in the Arab world have highlighted the potency of Islamist forces in post-revolutionary societies in the region, a force arguably unlocked first by Iran’s version of the ‘spring’ three decades ago. The economic ramifications of these uprisings are of special interest at a time when the possibility of the creation of Islamic states can have implications for their economic policy and performance again. A study of the Iranian experience in itself can offer rare insights whether for its own features and characteristics or for its possible lessons and implications for recent events in the region. This book is concerned with the economic aspects and consequences of the Iranian Revolution in general and its interaction with the international economy in particular. Many studies have to date dealt with Iran’s economic challenges, policies and performance in the post-revolutionary period but its interaction with the international economy – although of growing importance – has not received sufficient attention. The contributions in this volume by experts in the field address ways in which in the span of three decades, Iran’s economy has evolved from a strong aspiration to develop an ‘independent economy’ to grappling with debilitating international economic sanctions.
