This edited book brings together documented evidence and theoretical propositions on the essential mediating role of digital technology in L2 teacher education and professional development. Topics range from technological affordances in teacher education, to challenges and responses to emergency transition from face to face to virtual professional development, to successful practices of online teacher training courses. Bringing together examples from various countries and contexts of how L2 teacher trainers and trainee teachers view these forced changes and react to them, the volume fills a gap in the use of digital technology in contexts where teacher educators and trainee teachers are not technology-literate and not prepared for technology-oriented education. School adoption in teacher education

Increasing pre-service teachers' responsibility during practice

School adoption is an ambitious and innovative partnership model in teacher education which offers unique opportunities for in-service and pre-service teachers. At its core, teachers leave their school to be adopted by teacher students for one week. While the teachers engage in a professional development course outside the school, they are fully substituted by teacher students, who thus have an increased responsibility for the pupils’ learning, for the organizational matters of the school and for their own professional development. In this volume, we present different international concepts of school adoption, lessons learned, and first theoretical considerations. With it, we invite teacher educators in schools, universities, and other institutions to engage into a dialogue about the perspectives school adoption offers for teacher education and teacher education research.

These proceedings present a selection of papers from the ICTTE 2021 conference. While face-to-face classroom instruction is brought back, there are a lot of lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic that schools, teacher training and education institutions, and government have to take into account. There is a need to reconsider what additional knowledge and skills pre-service teachers and in-service teachers need to be prepared for to anticipate such a similar unexpected situation in the future. Additionally, there is also a need to listen to in-service teacher experiences during the emergency remote teaching and integrate the positive lessons that they have gained, such as the use of technology, into the current post pandemic face-to-face classroom instruction. Social History of Timbuktu

The Role of Muslim Scholars and Notables 1400-1900

Originally published in 1983, this book deals with the precolonial history of the Islamic West African city of Timbuktu. The book traces the fortunes of this fabled city from its origins in the twelfth century, and more especially from around 1400 onwards, to the French conquest in the late nineteenth century. The study rests upon a comprehensive utilisation of the Timbuktu sources, including the well-known chronicles or tarikhs of Timbuktu. The author focuses on the role of scholars and, in so doing, he provides a fresh study of a learned community in sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, the study shows that the scholars occupied a position of leadership and authority in the social structure of the city. Hence, in providing fuller understanding of the role of scholars and their status as 'notables', the work makes it possible to understand the enigma which has surrounded this extraordinary city throughout its history. It contributes an important perspective for historians of Africa, the Middle East and Islam.
