Mahar adalah suatu pemberian yang tulus ikhlas yang diberikan suami kepada istri yang besar-kecilnya ditentukan oleh mereka sendiri. Dengan diberikannya mahar terhadap istri menjadi suatu tanda bahwa seorang suami telah menyatakan bahwa dia mampu utnuk menghidupi dan mampu untuk menjalankan suatu bahtera kehidupan yang begitu berat dan banyak cobaan yang akan dia hadapi, dan seorang istri dengan menerima pemberian mahar dari suaminya menjadi suatu pertanda bahwa istri telah rela kehidupannya diatur dan dipimpin oleh suaminya, dan dia harus taat dan patuh terhadap apa yang telah diperintahkan oleh suami kecuali bertentangan dengan perintah Ilahi. Dengan mahar itu suami istri telah mengikatkan dirinya kepada perintah Allah agar mereka hidup berkeluarga yang tidak bisa lepas dari norma-norma yang ditentukan oleh Islam.
